Special People—Special Gifts

Bettie Walsh didn't set out to be one of Children's benefactors. Twenty years ago, she was asked by her women's club to donate toys to Children's. She agreed, and later she was asked for dolls—not just any dolls, but anatomically correct ones that could be used in child abuse programs. She began making them for the Chadwick Center for Children and Families, and the demand grew exponentially. Bettie's dolls were sold to doctors and attorneys all over the world and eventually raised $50,000 for child abuse programs. Bettie still occasionally makes dolls but, as she said, "I've pretty much saturated the market."

Spurred by Bettie's involvement with Children's, she and her husband, John, decided to donate some of the money she inherited when her sister, an emergency room nurse in the Bay Area, passed away a couple of years ago. "We wanted the money to be put to good use," explained Bettie. The couple set up a charitable gift annuity, a gift plan that allows the couple to receive income for their lifetimes and benefit the Chadwick Center later.

Bettie and John were so pleased with the outcome of their first charitable gift annuity that they opted to make a second gift to Children's Chadwick Center using the same vehicle.

Bettie and John attend some of the local Children's Circle of Care events and enjoy the company of the people they've met through Children's. "You just can't say enough good about Children's," exclaimed Bettie.
