Chuck Hirst was born with a speech impairment that presented social challenges for him as a child. He underwent a surgical procedure to correct his impairment, but his peers often treated him cruelly, making learning difficult. Chuck transferred to a new school where kids were more kind, but a seed for helping others like him had already been planted.
As a young adult, Chuck joined the U.S. Marine Corps. After his service, he worked in construction where he earned a decent living that allowed him to begin making plans for supporting charitable causes close to his heart, including the Speech Language Pathology program at Rady Children's.
"I want to help children who are living with the same thing I had," Chuck says. Establishing a charitable gift annuity allows Chuck to invest in Rady Children's and help to cultivate the Hospital's growth while receiving a steady income during his lifetime. "Rady Children's is doing great things," he adds, "and a gift annuity provides income for me, and lets me help kids during my lifetime. It's a wonderful way to give."
