"My idea of philanthropy is to give it all away," Jere says. "I feel like if I can do something to help someone else, then that's what I should do."
Over the years, the Orens established multiple charitable gift annuities designated for the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the Emergency Department at Rady Children's. By establishing these charitable gift annuities, the Orens receive income from their gifts for the rest of Jere's life, after which the remainder of the annuity transfers to Rady Children's.
When the Jere's daughter was little, she was treated for a staph infection at Boston Children's. They were impressed by the hospital's dedication to children, and see their gift to Rady Children's as a way of giving back to pediatric medicine. Through their generosity, the Orens are doing their part to leave a bright future for San Diego's children.
"I wanted to do it now," Jere says, "and enjoy the thrill of seeing others enjoy the fruits of my labor."
